A Compassion Call for Haiti Disaster
Aug 20, 2010
Brought to you by www.australianchristian.net Compassion Australia is encouraging Australian Christians to advocate and act on behalf of the thousands of Haitian children and their families now in desperate need of water, food and shelter after successive cyclones caused wide-spread destruction around the country. The devastating cyclones sent wave after wave of torrential rain and wind across Haiti and its neighbours, causing mass widespread flooding and damage to roads and other infrastructure. So far more than 600 have been killed and over 650000 left homeless with little access to food and clean water. Haiti, the most impoverished nation in the Western Hemisphere, is the least able to cope with this devastation because of extreme poverty and a lack of infrastructure. In many areas what little infrastructure there was has now been destroyed along with homes, crops and livestock, said CEO of Compassion Australia, Paul ORourke. Haitians are already suffering as a result of the global food crisis where escalating food prices are preventing hundreds of thousands of families from having enough food to feed their children. Now many have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods, plunging this already impoverished nation, into further despair. Natural disasters have no regard for persons or seasons and the people of Haiti need our immediate help, said Paul ORourke. Compassion is making every effort possible to assist those most affected by the destruction whilst helping ...
Profiting off Haiti's disaster?
Aug 27, 2010
Millions of dollars from around the world are pouring into Haiti to provide basic aid for the earthquake devastated nation. And millions of dollars in foreign investments are also flowing into the country to help it rebuild and shape its future. However, many Haitians see the expansion of foreign companies as a way to take advantage of the widespread poverty plaguing the country, where the unemployment rate is up to 80 per cent. The exploitation concerns come as former US presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush prepare to visit the Caribbean nation on Monday to discuss long-term recovery efforts with Haitian officials. And a part of their plans will be to discuss the expansion of clothing industries in the country - in which workers earn less than $4 a day - one of the lowest wages in the world. Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports from the city of Ouanaminthe - home to some of the country's biggest textile businesses. [March 22, 2010]
GGN- US Defense Had Mock Haiti Disaster Drill Day Before Earthquake, Coincidence?
Aug 26, 2010
www.nextgov.com As personnel representing hundreds of government and nongovernment agencies from around the world rush to the aid of earthquake-devastated Haiti, the Defense Information Systems Agency has launched a Web portal with multiple social networking tools to aid in coordinating their efforts. On Monday, Jean Demay, DISA's technical manager for the agency's Transnational Information Sharing Cooperation project, happened to be at the headquarters of the US Southern Command in Miami preparing for a test of the system in a scenario that involved providing relief to Haiti in the wake of a hurricane. After the earthquake hit on Tuesday, Demay said SOUTHCOM decided to go live with the system. On Wednesday, DISA opened up its All Partners Access Network, supported by the Transnational Information Sharing Cooperation project, to any organization supporting Haiti relief efforts. The information sharing project, developed with backing from both SOUTHCOM and the Defense Department's European Command, has been in development for three years. It is designed to facilitate multilateral collaboration between federal and nongovernmental agencies. Demay said that since DISA set up a Haiti Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Community of Interest on APAN on Wednesday, almost 500 organizations and individuals have joined, including a range of Defense units and various nongovernmental organizations and relief groups. APAN provides a series of collaboration tools, including ...
